O'Stunted's
limited tactics hands easy win to England youngsters.
Ireland, yet again, flattered to deceive this time against a young English side. Ireland went 0 - 10 up thanks to quick thinking by Reddan and O'Gara in getting the ball wide quickly to give Kearney the chance to barge over. O'Gara converted and moments later he was slotting over a penalty as Best caught Balshaw in possession. Unfortunately Ireland didn't trouble the scoreboard again as England turned the heat up and Ireland wilted.
As it was, England didn't need to do that much. They just went through the basics and this was more than enough to beat an Ireland side totally devoid of ideas, inspiration and leadership. It was embarrassing in the second half watching O'Connell and Horgan bash it up the middle only to be turned over time and time again. Trimble spent more time in rucks an mauls than the total Irish back row which seemed to vanish from twenty minutes on.
When defending Trimble and Horgan were like moths heading towards the flame as they drifted towards Vainikolo every time he appeared infield leaving huge gaps on either side which were easily exploited. So poor was this centre pairing that O'Driscoll (who has been absolutely gash this year) looked better and better, both as a player and captain, the longer the game went on. (There were times when you thought that O'Gara was just going to burst into tears as he huffed and puffed with the referee.)
How O'Stunted has been allowed to let things
get to this stage is beyond belief and surely more than just
him should be stepping down this week when the Six Nations
review is completed.
As for the Ulster boys; Trimble was disappointing for the second game in a row. He put in a colossal amount of work but he was frequently out of position and he missed a couple more tackles. He needs to come home and return to basics. Tommy B had an OK game and made ground every time he got the ball and he should feature in the summer tour. Rory was immense yet again and his workload is an example to all young hookers, easily Ireland's Man of the Match.
As if the rugby wasn't bad enough The FRU received another disturbing picture of old men in shirts meant for young men.
It appears that this fashion suicide is not confined to Irish men of "a certain age" as some of those English chaps will need to be lightly oiled and prized out of their shirts with a shoe horn after a few celebratory pints.
Maybe the guy in the middle in plain clothes is smiling so broadly because he's got the oil!!
